Eastern antiquity: Greeks and Jews

With the publication of the treatise De Pictura (1435) Alberti defined innovative rules for the figurative arts, producing an immediate echo in artistic production, in particular that of Florence. A few years later, another fundamental event in which Alberti took part in Florence in 1439 - the Council held to promote the unification of the Latin and Greek churches - contributed to an extraordinary dissemination of the ancient knowledge of classical Greece.
